Skills training for youth
Helping empower young people in Indonesia with skills training
The Need
For children and youth growing up in poverty, getting an education or some form of vocational skills training is key to breaking the destructive cycle of poverty and building a brighter future.
However, for children and young people growing up in rural parts of Indonesia like Sekolaq Darat, opportunities to train in any skill are quite limited. Many caregivers are subsistence farmers and can barely provide for their families, let alone cover the cost of further education. Any kind of post-secondary education or vocational training is expensive, far beyond what families living in poverty can afford.
Staff at the Tuhiq Jaji Compassion centre in Sekolaq Darat recognize that students need these important development opportunities in order to break free from poverty. That’s why they have been running their own vocational courses to help youth develop new skills, in the hope that it might help them gain decent employment.
But with limited resources, our partners haven’t been able to offer the kind of specialized training that students need to get good jobs in the future. In order to truly help these promising young people get ahead, they knew they needed to do more. By offering specialized and fully equipped vocational courses at the centre, they hoped to equip students with the skills they will need and empower them to pursue their dreams and goals, helping them break free from poverty for good.
Our Response
With your generous support, 373 students from the Tuhiq Jaji Compassion centre in Sekolaq Darat were able to attend vocational training courses. By learning new skills, they will be able to get better jobs or even start their own businesses to earn income and be financially self-sufficient.
The initial programs planned included baking, graphic design, agriculture, electronics and screen printing. Equipment was purchased for each course, but unfortunately the tools and equipment necessary to run the screen printing program were difficult to obtain and the course was cancelled. The funds allocated for that particular program will be returned to Compassion Indonesia.
Our local partner church pitched in to help, too. Local funds and resources were used to build classrooms and finish ceilings for the music studio to make sure that students would have a good learning environment.
The results have already been incredibly positive. Students who attended baking courses made Christmas cookies that were sold to church members and parents. The proceeds from the sale of the cookies were given back to students in the form of a savings account to reinforce the importance of managing finances wisely. Students who attended music courses have already put their creativity to work by recording songs and entering competitions. Some have also joined the worship teams at their local churches. Students in the graphic design class designed the name tags that were used for a youth exhibition and job expo. These students saw that what they created could be useful. Those pursuing agriculture planted, nurtured and harvested vegetables and then prepared them for the children at the centre to enjoy and sold the excess. Profits from the produce sales went toward building more classrooms at the centre. Some students also learned how to repair and maintain motorcycles. Our hope is that the young people will be able to repair vehicles so that when they grow up, they will have the skills to work and earn income.
Fully equipped with the tools and supplies they need to pursue vocational skills, these students will be able to find decent jobs to become economically self-sufficient as they work to lift themselves out of poverty.

This intervention really helps the beneficiaries gain expertise through development activities. It also helps the beneficiaries develop their talents and potential so that they can produce something useful in developing their creativity.
This intervention has had a very big impact on our ability to serve in the church as well as in the centre because it is very useful in the process of teaching and learning activities. It is not only beneficial for the church, but also for the children in learning. An example is that beneficiaries who practise developing their music can be involved in church services. One child who is involved in culinary development has practised baking cookies at home and now sells them.
We were given all the tools and equipment needed to carry out each activity. Now, the beneficiaries can learn and develop themselves with adequate facilities. The effect of this intervention also has a positive impact on children and helps us serve the beneficiaries even better.
To the donors who have supported this intervention financially, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for helping and assisting us in realizing the dreams of the beneficiaries in our centre. We pray that God will always bless your efforts.

Prior to this intervention, I took culinary lessons at the centre with only minimal equipment, and I wasn’t too serious in pursuing this field.
After this intervention, my friends and I were increasingly equipped in our skills by studying culinary arts. Our focus was cake making, so I thought forward and wanted to develop my abilities to realize my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. I was even more active in following the culinary tutoring, because it was supported by complete equipment and supplies.
I believe that my future will be bright because I have been equipped by taking this culinary training. We are learning how to become entrepreneurs, and someday I want to be able to start my own cake shop so I can support myself and also help my parents with the results of my efforts and hard work.
I am very grateful to those who have helped us. Because of this intervention, we can develop our abilities. I pray that the Lord Jesus will always bless you. We are very grateful for the support that has been given to us.
ReportThank you for your generosity
Because of your kindness, 373 students have a much brighter future ahead. You have helped them attend vocational classes to learn skills that will last them a lifetime, helping them get stable jobs so they can stay in their communities and even create jobs for others in the future. Students are so grateful. Before this intervention, our partner churches offered high-level skills training, but without the full equipment needed to truly learn and develop the skills needed for various trades, students were still falling short of the demands in the marketplace. Now, not only have they gained valuable job skills, but they have been empowered to pursue their God-given goals and dreams. Some already plan to start their own small businesses, while others are developing their creativity through music and songwriting. With students’ efforts already showing so much promise, it’s exciting to think about where their journeys may take them!Staff and church leaders are thankful, too. Their desire is to see children and young people grow and thrive holistically, and you have helped them achieve something they couldn’t have done on their own. Local churches are also being blessed, as students become more involved in ministries like the worship team. Thank you for reaching out in God’s love to help these students begin to build a bright future for themselves, their families and their broader communities!
