Thida is 3 years old and lives in Cambodia.
I live with my mother and father in the Mongkol Borie area. The primary language where I live is Khmer. My mother and father are sometimes employed as day labourers. I like art and/or drawing, ball games, dancing and dolls. I am not attending school because I am too young.
Cambodia is situated in Southeast Asia with trade routes linking China to India. Because of its central location and tumultuous history, it has been influenced by many Asian cultures, alongside French and American influences. It is largely a rural nation, with a few urban centres like the capital, Phnom Penh.
For 2,000 years this region had a noble history, with Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms ruling over territories that are now part of Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. During the 12th century, massive temples such as Angkor Wat were constructed and the kingdom thrived. Towards the 20th century, Cambodia was colonized by the French, then experienced occupation by the Japanese during wartime. The post-war instability eventually led to the reign of a rural communist movement, the Khmer Rouge, between 1975 and 1979. During this time, at least 1.5 million Cambodians were killed or died, the effects of which still impact the nation today. Following this regime, invasion by Vietnam began an additional 20 years of war.
Today, a constitutional monarchy has been established and the nation is experiencing relative peace.
Recently great advances to infrastructure have allowed most homes to have electricity, at least for a portion of each day. Living standards are rapidly improving for many, but rural households still lack access to basic services and stable income.
Compassion’s ministry is focused on what we call holistic child development. This means developing children in all the different aspects of their lives—their minds, bodies and relationships—while giving them the opportunity to hear about and experience the love of Jesus from caring local church staff and volunteers.
Absolutely not! We encourage children and families of all faiths and backgrounds to register in our programs and would never require or coerce anyone to convert to Christianity.
Learn MoreToday, children around the world are discovering that poverty doesn’t have to be their future. Help one more do the same by sponsoring with Compassion!
While we're sorry you could not sponsor this specific child, we would love to help you find a different child to sponsor.
