Our Response

Your generous gift is providing tuition fees for 18 students from 12 Compassion centres in North Sumatra, Indonesia, allowing them to complete three- or four-year college degrees. Church staff and leaders are working closely with each student to provide them with the support and mentorship they need to succeed in their academic careers and become leaders in their communities.

Most of the students are studying at either Polytechnic Wilmar Business Indonesia (WBI), which specializes in entrepreneurship-based education and STIKES Murni Tegu, which specializes in nursing and midwifery programs.

Because of your support, these 18 young men and women are continuing to excel in their studies, grow their skills and follow their dreams. Four students receiving scholarships were replaced, with Inriyani, Selwi, Selviawati and Cynthia being welcomed to the program.

Here is an update on each of the students you are supporting:

• Fidelia, Imelda, Inriyani, Lesi, Mimarnike, Arlitus and Ribka are studying at STIKES Murni Teguh and are all in their fifth semesters:
o Fidelia is studying midwifery and has a GPA of 3.40. She has been enjoying learning practical skills including delivering babies in local health centres. She has been involved in many campus activities as well as health and hygiene awareness campaigns for the surrounding community, schools and villages.
o Imelda is studying nursing and has recently learned how to give injections to and draw blood from patients. She has been working hard and uses her free time to study. She currently has a 3.32 GPA.
o Inriyani has a GPA of 3.38 and is working towards her goal of becoming a midwife. She is also learning entrepreneurship skills so that she can one day open her own midwifery practice.
o Lesi is studying nursing and has been enjoying school. She hopes to continue her education after completing her bachelor’s degree. She currently has a GPA of 3.13.
o Mimarnike has a GPA of 3.34 and is working on her nursing degree. She is particularly interested in pediatric nursing. She has also been involved in campus activities, such as student debate competitions.
o Arlitus is studying nursing and currently has a GPA of 3.22. He has been enjoying learning about different medical procedures such as injection techniques and catheter insertion.
o Ribka is in the nursing program and has a GPA of 3.54. She is working through an internship at the local hospital and has also become a lab assistant. She is also active in the Christian student organization on campus.

• Christy, Yesaya, Amanda, Yeni, Aritra, Theo, Anju, Venesia are studying at Wilmar Business Indonesia (WBI):
o Christy is studying international marketing management and has a GPA of 3.69. She recently had the opportunity to become the Master of Ceremonies for a campus talk show with the US consulate and to speak at the campus graduation day.
o Yesaya is also studying international marketing management and has been enjoying both studying and participating in extracurricular activities such as singing competitions. He has a GPA of 2.71. During semester breaks he helped his parents in the fields and has actively contributed to activities at his local Compassion centre.
o Amanda is enrolled in the tax accounting program. She has been enjoying the program, making friends on campus while also spending time with her family during school breaks.
o Yeni and Aritra are both studying horticultural agribusiness and are currently in their fifth semester. Aritra competed in many team sports on campus and reached the grand final in chess. She also won second place in futsal, soccer and volleyball. Yeni has been very involved in her studies and took an inter-semester study on campus while other students were on holiday break.
o Theo is in his fifth semester studying international marketing management. He spent the school break at home so he could see many of his friends.
o Anju is also in his fifth semester in the international marketing management program. During his recent holiday break, he worked part-time to earn extra income and is excited to enter the workforce after graduating. His dream is to work in Korea.
o Venesia is studying tax accounting and is starting her fifth semester. She enjoys participating in campus activities. She is part of a campus committee and leads orientations for new students. After graduation she would like to start her own online business.

• Selwi has successfully graduated from informatics management at Politeknik Negri Medan. She graduated Cum Laude with a 3.75 GPA and earned an associate degree.

• Selviawati is in her fifth semester studying midwifery at the University of Imelda.

• Cynthia has completed her midwifery studies at Poltekes Kemenkes Medan. She recently took the national midwifery competency exam and passed with a competent score. She is set to attend her graduation ceremony soon.

Thanks to your generous support, two students have already completed their programs and the others are well on their way to finishing their degrees. These students have been learning vital life skills such as work-life balance as well as important practical skills that will help them as they finish college and enter the workforce.

Internships: Some students have been participating in internships at clinics or at the hospital, allowing them to learn valuable practical skills.

Friendships: The students have been enjoying developing friendships with other participants as well as their classmates.

Community service: Students such as Yesaya and Theo are still involved in their local Compassion centres, teaching younger students at the centres and serving on the worship team in the church. Fidelia served in a village health clinic doing community service.

For students living in poverty, high tuition fees make accessing higher education out of reach. But thanks to your generous support, 18 young men and women in North Sumatra, Indonesia, are pursuing a higher education and working hard to achieve their dreams.

Before this intervention, these students had little hope of attending college and breaking free from generational cycles of poverty. But thanks to your gift, these high-potential youth are studying programs like marketing, horticultural agribusiness, nursing and midwifery—all programs that will not only allow them to find good jobs but will also allow them to give back to their communities.

One of Compassion’s goals is to see registered children finish well from the child development program. Our church partners have been watching with hope and excitement as they see this goal come to life—they are seeing these young men and women grow into adults who will thrive as they follow Jesus and actively influence positive change in their world. Our partners have reported that the participants have been developing self-confidence, supporting themselves and their families, building healthy relationship with others and taking responsibility for their studies.

Your generosity has allowed these deserving students to not only dream of a future filled with hope, but to achieve it. Thank you for recognizing the high potential of these 18 young men and women. We look forward to providing you with more updates as they continue to work towards their goals.
