One of the best ways to impact your Compassion children is to write to them. Letters from sponsors tell children that they matter and that someone cares for them—which is a big deal if you live in an environment that continually tells you to give up.

But we know it can be hard to get started, especially if it’s been awhile. We can start to feel guilty. And then we can start to feel paralyzed. Never fear. We’ve made letter writing super simple. You can send your Compassion child a letter in three easy steps.

  1. Login to my.compassion.ca. (Don’t have an account? Click the “sign up” button on the page to get started. If you need help, give us a quick call at 1-800-563-5437.)
  2. Click on the child you’d like to write. You’ll see your Compassion child(ren) on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. Click “write a letter.” Type your text in the message field, and click “send now.” You can also attach a picture if you want.

See—easy as pie!

Merry Grace Legarde sits reading a letter from her sponsor at home

Your letters are a great source of encouragement to your Compassion child. A study carried out in Peru, Rwanda, Guatemala, eastern India and Thailand reported that more than 90 per cent of children strongly experience joy, love, encouragement and a sense of belonging when they receive letters from their sponsors. They feel more motivated at school and church activities, and they consistently demonstrate greater confidence, including behaviours such as an ability to care, awareness of generosity and sharing, ability to communicate, obedience and helpfulness. Virtually all children who receive sponsor letters keep them forever, regularly reading and rereading them, particularly when they are discouraged.

You may be thinking, “But what do I write?” Think simple: tell them about your daily life, what your hobbies are, what you do for work. Help them get to know you a little better, and ask them about their life, too. You can also send them a favourite Bible verse or tell them what the Lord has been teaching you. Here’s an example of a letter:

Dear Maria,

Thank you for your letters. I really liked your drawing of your house, and I am glad that your family is healthy. It is summer here now and it is very hot. My family visited a lake, where we went swimming and caught fish to eat.

I work in a book store where I help customers find the books they want. What would you like to do when you grow up?

Here is a Bible verse I really like: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) I am trying to trust the Lord for my future, and I pray that you would put your trust in Him too!

I am praying for you and love you,

Nancy
